Playing at the mall...
Columbia Mall now has a really nice kids' play area. It's a great way to tire out a kid while Sears installs a new battery in the minivan.

Inexpensive Eyeglasses
Today my latest order from Zennioptical.com arrived - a pair of non-prescription (apparently the technical name is plano) sunglasses. I had previously ordered two pairs of prescription eyeglasses. All three pairs have been without problems, arriving about 2 weeks after being ordered. And all of them were under $25 each.
There's a few sites where people can post reviews of merchants, and there were mixed reviews of Zenni. My first order was for a backup pair of glasses - I figured if they were screwed up it wasn't a big deal. But, they weren't screwed up - on the contrary they came out very nice. Your experiences may vary, but I'm a very happy customer and will order again.

This is why men shouldn't live alone
I'm helping my buddy Sean move and this is a picture of his fridge. It pretty much has about 200 bottles of beer and a pack of Kraft singles American cheese.

It's been a week since my surgery....
I'm at the 1 week mark since my surgery. Overall, I'm very happy and wish I had done this years ago. My eyes are definitely improving indoors (I set my monitor's resolution back to 1280x1024). My eyes still get "tired" and dry towards the end of the day. I do have some glare and haloing at night. It's not bad enough that it would keep me from driving at night if I had to, but I'll leave the night driving to my wife for the time being. Still using lots of lubricant eye drops.
I really can't believe that my glasses are gone. I had a -8 diopter perscriptiopn, so I was blind without my glasses. It still feels SOOO weird to not be wearing them. I really wish I had done this years ago.

Slow but steady
Things keep on improving, albeit in baby steps. Yesterday I could change my monitor's resolution from 800x600 to 1924x768 without any problems seeing things. And the later in the day it gets, the drier my eyes get. After dinner I'm constantly hitting the drops. I love it outside during the day - things look great!

It's been 4 days....
Yesterday was my first day back at work after LASIK. Florescent lights weren't that great for my eyes - I went through a ton of drops. I changed the resolution on my monitor down to 800x600 to make everything easier to read. Driving is fine, but I can tell that I'm not quite 20/20. Hopefully things will continue to improve, but if not, this is certainly good enough for most things and I can have a "touch up" procedure done in a few months.

The 48 Hour report
It's been 48 hours since I got my LASIK. Things continue to improve. I was comfortable driving us to breakfast this morning. Very little discomfort. What discomfort there wa turned out to be due to an eyelash in my eye. A makeup mirror turned out to be a wonderful help in finding and CAREFULLY removing the eyelash. I'm going through lots of rewetting drops - no big deal. If you're going to do this, pick up at least 3 boxes of the preservative free rewetting / lubricating drops. You'll use them.
So far, the only thing I can say was a surprise was how bad I hurt when the numbing drops wore off. All of the after-care notes says to go home and sleep, but if you're not asleep within 30 minutes of finishing your procedure, you're in trouble. You'll be a hurting pup.

Day after checkup
Just got out of the doctor's office - 20/50 in one eye, 20/40 in the other, 20/30 combined. Yea! Going through lots of the fake tears - they feel good and make my vision sharper. Doc said everything looked great as far a healing goes.
I CAN SEE!
It's been almost 24 hours, and I can honestly say that I'm virtually pain-free. My right eye feels a little dry and "tired", but other than that I feel great. Vision is good, not perfect. Better than last night.

5 hours later...
Well, I'm not going to BS - my eyes are hurting a bit. They were extremely sore when the drops wore off. A few more Tylenol PM and a 2 - 3 hour nap helped that. Now, it's just somewhat sore.
NO FREAKING VALIUM!!!!
Had I known that they don't give you valium I would have had a Sam Adams or two...

OK.. Getting nervous.
As the day's gone on I'm getting more and more nervous. I'm not going to sleep worth a damn tonight.
But, hey, if everything goes according to plan I've only got to search for my glasses for one more morning!
Everyone that I've talked to that has had LASIK (or had a family member get it done) has had great things to say about it. But, if you Google "LASIK" you'll see all sorts of horror stories about people's corneas falling out and rolling across the operating room. It seems like people who's LASIK goes poorly are far more likely to post online than people who's LASIK goes well. Kinda makes sense, I guess. I'll post either way. I did see good things when I Googled my surgeon (Sonny Goel at LASIKPLUS). Made me feel a little better.

More thoughts on LASIK
Well, I've pretty much told everyone about getting LASIK this Friday. I figure it's like telling all your buddies that you're going to ask out that girl you have a crush on - there's no going back now. I picked up my antibiotic drops for after the surgery.
It's kind of funny - I've found myself taking my glasses off periodically just to try to figure out what I'll look like and what it'll feel like not to wear them all day. Gonna be weird.

LASIK
So, I've decided to get LASIK this week. I had an exam last week and I'm told that I'm an excellent candidate. The last time I looked into LASIK (about 7 years ago) the doctor declined to perform the procedure saying the the combination of my large pupils (almost 9mm) and a -8 diopter (blind as a bat) made glare problems a distinct possibility. But, things have improved over the last 7 years and after healing I should have an excellent prognosis.
I've talked myself out of and back into the surgery about a dozen times. Right now, I'm feeling pretty good about things. I'm sure that'll change several more times before 8:45am Friday.

Our new bathroom!
Here's Jamie and Frannie's latest project - we re-did the downstairs bathroom. Came out pretty nice! New paint, sink vanity, lighting, floor, etc. Very happy with the results.
